Phuket, Thailand
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and is connected to the mainland by two bridges. The island is mountainous with mountains running from the south to the north end of the island. The highest elevation is 529 m (1,736 ft) above sea level. Phuket is world famous and is one of the top favorite locations due to its white sandy beaches, clear ocean waters, tall palm trees and lively cities with a vibrant nightlife. In addition, it has a great night market, delicious seafood, and the white marble large Buddha statue is a favorite to see.
The Thai language is spoken by all the locals, but with so many foreigners living and visiting Phuket, English is also a dominate language on the island.
As an international favorite destination, with many international direct flights arriving at the Phuket International Airport, Phuket continues to draw tourists from many countries.
This island experienced extensive damage when it was hit by the 2004 Tsunami. Up to 250 documented people were killed in Phuket and an additional 1,000 undocumented workers were also killed. All the major beaches and cities on the west coast experienced major damage damaging several hotels, resorts, and businesses. Today, the island is completely restored back with modern hotels, transportation and other conveniences.
What to do on Phuket Island?
The main attractions on the island are the beaches, shopping, and, of course, the nightlife. There are many cities to visit on the island, our favorite is Patong Beach. Patong has a great shopping center, a variety of restaurants, and nice hotels from inexpensive to very expensive.
Be sure to visit the Big Buddha at the top of the mountain. The Buddha statue is interesting, but the view from up there is amazing. You’ll also want to visit the famous Temple Wat Chalong. You’ll want to take a speedboat trip to the many nearby tropical islands, including the famous Koh Phi Phi, or enjoy a cruise around Phang Nga Bay. Click here for more things to do.
There are many excursions available with the popular ones being a boat ride to see the James Bond island – Koh Tapu, where “The Man with the Golden Gun” was filmed. All the typical amenities including snorkeling, diving, sailing, jet skiing, para-sailing, etc. can be found on Phuket.
The best way to get to Phuket is to fly to the International Airport located on the northern end of the island. There are many flights from most of the Thailand airports as well as international locations.
